Two Sides

Look around yourself, find an object that is one sided. None, right? Every thing that surrounds you has minimim two or multiple sides. So, how can a story or incident reported by a friend, colleage or family member be taken as full truth?

Yet, in every situation when there is a conflict between people, we listen to one side of the story and believe it to be true. We block the other side, nay believe it does not exist. We fill the one side that we are associated with imaginary stories of betrayal and backstabbing by the other party. We love the act of consoling and being there for each other and hence, our prime goal is to console by offering choiciest abuses and manufactured malintentions to make the other side look brutal than usual.

If we were to look on the other side, understand their point of view and then bring both sides together we can be peacemakers. But that is hard. You have to let go of your ego. Look small and humble to access both parties. Hence, we stick to the ego boosting exercise of "I told you so", "I knew him/her from the beginning", "You poor gullible thing, totally believed" etc. We hold power in the situation. Power of being a well-wisher, sympathiser, friend in need. However, we let the person who hinges their trust in us to believe in imaginary stories. We discourage them from confronting the situation and finding out the real truth, even if it means keeping their ego aside. We block them from the truth which can bring lasting peace and maintaing a relationship intact.

Look back and see how many situations you have played that role of fake consoling. Maybe you have been the courageous, ego-less one who encouraged the other to find the truth and make peace. Your choices matter and make you who you are. Given a choice today, who would you like to be?
